Chapter 14

LOGAN

The first voice I heard first thing in the morning was my mother's. She called me at the crack of dawn when the medical center discharged her. She called me to schedule lunch at the estate as she'd have her driver take her there after she freshened up.

"I was hoping to have a day for myself," I muttered and yawned.

"Come for an hour. Then do as you please."

I agreed and hung up. I slept for another hour.

Isabella was away, and I wouldn't see her. She had lessened her texts too. I caught myself looking forward to the next time I'd touch her. She had such power over me, and I reasoned a day apart was probably good for me, too. All I wanted was to submerge in the passion and forget the rest.

But life had to continue, and I had vowed to turn a new leaf as far as business was concerned. I couldn't stay in bed with her all day with responsibilities piling on me.

And my mother. Her doctors had warned her to be low-key and not push herself. I knew at that moment more than ever that I had to prove myself to her. I had almost lost her too. This scared the fuck out of me. Maybe delving into my urges was my way of running from that.

I started my day with a run and a shower. It was refreshing, feeling my lungs expand with the crisp morning air. It had been months since I had gone for a run.

After a quick visit to the office and a short meeting with Collins, who briefed me about the week ahead, I headed to Napa Valley for lunch with my mother.

My mother was staring out the window of her office when I arrived. She looked lost in thought and not particularly happy.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

She shook her head and raised her hands as I approached her.

"I'm a bit overwhelmed, that's all."

"Did you speak to the doctors?"

She nodded, and her jaw tensed.

"What did they say?"

Her face was blank like she couldn't hear me.

I touched her shoulder.

"I'm going to need your help with everything, you know."

"Yes, Mother. I intend to."

She sighed and looked away. "Did you talk about a transplant?"

"No. Logan. Let it go. We have other pressing matters," she said and snapped herself back from whatever place she traveled to in her mind.

I wondered then, was I going to lose her anyway? Was there nothing the doctors could do? If not, why have all this money when it can't even help in such situations?

My mother shot me a warning look. "Okay. I'll drop it. For now."

We had lunch in the garden and then she told me what she was really worried about.

"I know you hate fashion. You've made that clear..."

"And weddings, equally so," I added.

She cleared her throat and I stopped to listen, "We've scheduled the launch of our winter collection. I wish I could overlook it all, but I need quite a bit from you."

Her eyes were concentrated on her plate and she spoke slowly.
